Chris Lucas | Week 4: Can you see the gradient yet

Chris Lucas | Week 4: Can you see the gradient yet

WEEKLY NARRATIVE

This is the week of integration. A lot of weeks before this have been trying to figure out the new direction, get assets to match it, and figure out ways in Maya to get it to work the way we want. Now I'm in Perforce (as is the rest of the art department), and it's time to make that change in more lasting ways. My main workflow this week was opening assets in Maya, creating flat and gradient color swatches as textures, dragging model UVs onto the gradient I want, and then re-exporting, and setting it up in Unity. I'm kind of worried that the changes I made don't seem very drastic yet, or that without a ton of furniture, flat shading doesn't work as well as the painted aesthetic we had last term. The idea was that by switching to this, we would be able to pump out assets at a faster rate, but it seems to be taking just as long as last quarter. Texturing also went a bit slower than usual, because of having to re-UV some of the objects before dragging them to the colors I wanted. Hopefully as we get used to this workflow though, we will also get much faster at it. I'm also confident that as we get more assets, the scenes will look more and more interesting. If not, I may do a second pass with secondary Albedo maps.

CONTENT WITH HOURS

  • Art Meeting (1 hours)

WORKFLOW EXAMPLES

POSITIVE OUTCOMES

  • First Passes done for lighting and texturing
  • All "Next Tasks" from last week got completed or mostly completed!

NEGATIVE OUTCOMES

  • Asset lists not updated consistently
  • Work not staggered properly, so that I was getting a lot of new assets as I should have been putting them into Unity UVed and textured  (but should get fixed in the coming weeks)
